What Will I Do in Scouts?
Scouting provides the opportunity to experience a variety of different experiences. On campouts, scouts camp, cook, play, and experience together. In other meetings, scouts further develop their leadership and communication abilities by working on projects that develop their scoutly skills and benefit the community.
Troop 163 meets weekly on Monday at 7pm-8:30pm at Westover Baptist Church. During weekly meetings, scouts work on a variety of projects. Meeting topics can range from first aid skills to a cooking competition. Scouts are also given time to work on the requirements to advance ranks from Scout to Eagle.
All of Troop 163 plus parents meet together biannually for a Court of Honor, which all Scouts and their families are encouraged to attend. Patrols show off the the advancements and acheivemens of their patrol members, and awards are presented to the Scouts. It is a time for the family to share in the Scouting spirit and celebrate progress in the troop. Be sure to attend and join in the excitement while watching your child advance! Scouts are deeply encouraged to wear their uniform.
Scouting is an outdoor-based program and we have lots of fun outdoor adventures! Camping is encouraged and required to advance ranks. The campsites we go to offer unique experiences such as rock climbing, archery, canoeing, or even for the scouts to work together and try something new. Scouts cook, clean, rest, and experience together.
We host service projects monthly. One such service project is Scouting for Food, where scouts facilitate a national food drive that delivers canned/packaged goods to those in need. During these projects, Scouts have fun working together for a greater good and learn how to give back to their community in meaningful and fulfilling ways.
The pinewood derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition which includes prizes for speed and design creativity. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. The Pack leaders will build tracks while you and your scout will design and build their own "grand prix" car to enter in the race. The race typically happens in late January or early February.
Leadership in the Boy Scouts of America is developed through hands-on responsibility, where Scouts plan activities, guide their peers, and learn to make decisions as a team. By serving in positions such as patrol leader or senior patrol leader, Scouts practice communication, problem-solving, and accountability in real situations. These experiences build confidence and prepare Scouts to become responsible leaders in their schools, communities, and future careers.
Merit badges in the Boy Scouts of America allow Scouts to explore a wide range of subjects, from outdoor survival and first aid to engineering and the arts. By completing the requirements, Scouts gain practical skills, learn from qualified counselors, and discover potential career interests. Earning merit badges also encourages personal growth, responsibility, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Add total number of merit badges aquired?
Girl Troop 163 participates in high-adventure trips that challenge Scouts physically and mentally while building teamwork and confidence. Their experiences at places like Philmont, Northern Tier, and Sea Base include backpacking, canoeing, and sailing in some of the most rugged and beautiful environments in the country. These trips create lasting memories while strengthening leadership, resilience, and outdoor skills.
